From the colorful streets of Cartagena to the historic community of San Basilio de Palenque, this experience invites participants to examine how culture, history, and resilience continue to shape leadership, belonging, and national identity.

Cartagena has long served as a crossroads of cultures, where Indigenous, African, and European influences have come together to create one of Latin America’s most dynamic cultural landscapes. As one of the principal ports during the transatlantic slave trade, the city offers opportunities to reflect on both the painful legacy of history and the enduring contributions of Afro-Colombian communities to Colombia’s culture, music, cuisine, language, and traditions.

Throughout this immersive experience, participants will engage with local historians, cultural leaders, artists, and community members while exploring Cartagena’s historic districts, neighborhoods, markets, and cultural landmarks. Through meaningful conversations and shared experiences, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of how history continues to influence identity, opportunity, and community today.

Participants will also visit San Basilio de Palenque, the first free African town in the Americas and a UNESCO-recognized community celebrated for preserving its unique language, traditions, music, and cultural heritage. Here, you’ll learn directly from community members through drumming, storytelling, local cuisine, and cultural workshops while discovering how generations have protected and celebrated their identity through resilience and collective leadership.

The journey also includes time to experience Colombia’s natural beauty, including a visit to the Totumo Mud Volcano, where participants can relax, reflect, and enjoy one of the country’s unique natural attractions.

This experience extends beyond sightseeing. Through cultural exchange, guided reflection, and community engagement, participants will strengthen cross-cultural communication, broaden their global perspective, and develop practical leadership skills rooted in empathy, collaboration, and cultural understanding.
