Shaya Collective hit the road once again, this time embarking on an intercultural adventure to the vibrant town of Livingston, Guatemala. This experience was more than just a trip; it was a deep dive into the rich and thriving Garifuna culture, a community that has withstood the test of time and remains strong in its traditions.
The Garifuna People: A Legacy of Resilience
The Garifuna people are descendants of West African slaves who were brought to Central America but ultimately fought for their freedom and settled in coastal regions. Their story is one of strength, resistance, and resilience, intertwining African, Indigenous, and Caribbean influences. Today, their culture continues to flourish through their music, language, food, and spiritual practices. Read more about the Garifuna’s history and resilience here.
The Journey to Livingston
Reaching Livingston is an adventure in itself. The journey begins with a bus ride from Guatemala City to Puerto Barrios, followed by a scenic boat trip to Livingston. As soon as we arrived, we immersed ourselves in the town’s vibrant energy, making our first stop at a local nail salon. It was fascinating to observe how beauty and self-care practices differ across cultures, offering a glimpse into everyday life in Guatemala.
A Taste of Garifuna Hospitality: The Garifuna House
Next, we visited the Garifuna House, a cultural hub run by a local Garifuna woman from Belize. She warmly welcomed us into her home, where we experienced the heartbeat of Garifuna culture—drumming and food. Learning traditional drumming rhythms was exhilarating, and preparing a meal together made the experience even more intimate. We crafted Tapado Garifuna, a rich Caribbean seafood stew, from scratch. Slicing bananas, plantains, and onions and blending them with local seasonings created a flavorful and unforgettable dish. Full recipe here.
Exploring the Natural Wonders: Rio Dulce and Siete Altares
With our hearts and stomachs full, we set off on a boat tour to explore the stunning Rio Dulce Canyon. The breathtaking scenery and crisp, fresh air offered a peaceful retreat from the bustling town. The next stop was Siete Altares, a beautiful series of waterfalls owned by a local Garifuna family. Walking up to the waterfalls was a journey in itself, with a path adorned by artwork featuring Garifuna culture and depictions of Black Jesus. The walk was slippery at times, but reaching the waterfalls was well worth the effort. Learn more about Siete Altares here.
A Cultural Immersion to Remember
Before leaving Livingston, we explored local shops and learned a few words in the Garifuna language, deepening our appreciation for this extraordinary culture. This intercultural experience was not just about witnessing a different way of life but about truly engaging with it. In an increasingly globalized world, such experiences are invaluable, fostering cross-cultural understanding and enhancing professional and personal growth.
