The first time I visited Sint Maarten, I stayed on the Dutch side.
I remember the views clearly.
The smell of the water near the boardwalk. Taking the lift at Emilio’s. Watching boats move slowly across the harbor. Eating along the strip at NOWHERE SPECIAL, listening to live music while the ocean settled into the evening.
The island was beautiful.
But when I left, I remember thinking something quietly uncomfortable:
I still didn’t understand the island’s character.
I had experienced the scenery, but not the environment beneath it.
So when I returned, I wanted something different.
Not just the beaches.
Not just the famous airport photo.
Not just another list of places people say you should visit.
I wanted to understand the people shaping the island’s atmosphere.
