Research

Over the past half-century, psychological research has often overlooked certain demographic groups, leading to an imbalance in the representation of diverse perspectives within academic literature. This underrepresentation has resulted in a knowledge gap, where studies focusing on specific communities are less prevalent and often conducted by researchers from different backgrounds.

This disparity in research focus and authorship has had far-reaching consequences. For instance, while studies on intergenerational trauma have led to increased understanding and support for some groups, others have not received the same level of attention or compassion. Additionally, historical unethical studies have eroded trust in research and scientific institutions among certain communities, a mistrust that persists today and can be observed in attitudes towards modern medical advancements, such as vaccine development.

Recent trends in research have highlighted another concerning issue: researchers without adequate background or training in health equity are often quick to pursue grants and publications in this field. This rush can lead to superficial or misguided research that fails to address the nuanced needs of diverse communities. Furthermore, there have been numerous documented cases of researchers building upon or utilizing the work and knowledge of others without proper attribution or collaboration, perpetuating a cycle of inequity in academic recognition and funding.

These issues underscore the critical importance of comprehensive research training that emphasizes cultural competence, ethical practices, and equitable collaboration. By promoting diverse representation in research teams and fostering an environment of mutual respect and credit-sharing, we can work towards a more inclusive and accurate body of psychological knowledge that benefits all communities.

At Shaya Partners, we recognize that diverse research teams are essential for providing solutions to communities' complex problems.

Insufficient access to information can limit certain communities’ awareness, knowledge, and understanding of potential solutions that could promote their prosperity. To build trust between academic institutions, researchers, and diverse communities, it’s crucial that members of these communities are actively involved in the research process as authors, leaders, and stakeholders.

Shaya Partners facilitates bridging the gap between academia and underrepresented communities. We collaborate with partners seeking practical solutions and evidence-based strategies to rebalance power dynamics through transparent action plans, aiming to promote prosperity and equity in academic settings.

We facilitate impactful research by:
